Finding the Best Fish & Chip Shops in England

With the rise of delivery apps and fast food chains, many fear that this could be the death of the traditional ‘chippy.’ Fortunately there’s still some top places to buy fish and chips in Yorkshire and further afield. Now’s the time to support them.

I was actually brought up in a fish and chips shop in Barnsley where I helped my parents peel the spuds and clean out the fryers. I often had to eat what was leftover from the day’s trade for my tea too.  So I’m partial to fish and chips cooked to perfection. I can taste when they’ve been cooked in clean oil and they’ve used good quality ingredients. Or they’ve been reheated and the oil hasn’t been changed regularly enough.

In West Yorkshire you can’t beat the mahogany colour or taste of George a Greens fish and chips fried in beef dripping. This is a proper old school chippy in the heart of Lupset Wakefield.

Nearby, also in Wakefield, is The Kingfisher which is on a par with George a Greens for their fish and chips. You can eat-in too. It’s just off junction 39 of the M1.

One of my favourite chippy’s in Leeds is the Miner’s in Morley.

Then in Whitby you’ve got The Magpie by the coast which is spot on. I know Yorkshire chef James Martin raves about this place as well.

For many unusual reasons if I was to travel for a fish and chip shop it would be to London’s Mayfair Chippy.

Before you stop readying, this place is run by two Leeds lads. While they serve up some top notch fish and chips as well as coronation chicken fritters and prawn toast.

Although for me the stand out dish is travel down south for is their Shepherds pie. Slow cooked lamb, fluffy mash and a lot of gravy. The ultimate comfort food.

Recently, I have been travelling across the Yorkshire coast and the length and breadth of Britain to find the best fish & chips because I am buzzing to partner with the English Fish & Chip Awards to find this year’s champion.
